About Tretinoin
What is Tretinoin used for?
Tretinoin is a potent derivative of vitamin A that promotes cell turnover. It is typically prescribed for acne, scarring, aging signs and sun-damaged skin. Tretinoin is available in creams, gels and lotions and helps restore a clear, healthy complexion.
How Tretinoin works
Tretinoin promotes the turnover of skin cells by irritating the skin to exfoliate dead and damaged cells and allow newer, healthier ones to take their place. It also promotes collagen growth and turnover deep in the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and improving overall skin texture.
Though similar to retinol, tretinoin is more concentrated. Retinol is available over the counter without a prescription. Tretinoin requires a prescription from a doctor, acts faster and produces more dramatic results.
What are the side effects of Tretinoin?
Tretinoin will likely irritate your skin, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. The following side effects should improve as your skin adjusts to the medication, but let your doctor know immediately if these persist or worsen over time.
Common Side Effects
- Warmth or stinging
- Skin redness or dryness
- Itching
- Scaling
- Acne breakouts
Other Side Effects
- Mild burning
- Skin Irritation
- Lightening of treated areas
- Chapping or peeling at the site
- Pain
How to Use Tretinoin
When using tretinoin, you want to go low and slow.
Start with a small pea-sized drop of medicine on the tip of your finger and use 2 or 3 little drops to apply the medicine all over your face. Depending on your prescription, you typically start every other night. Then as you get used to the medicine, you can progress to every single night and increase the strength of your medication if needed.
Tretinoin typically comes in cream or gel form and is applied each night before bedtime. Cleanse and dry your skin before applying it to your skin. The medication should quickly fade into your skin.
Once you have adjusted to the medication, use tretinoin regularly at the same time each day to stay consistent. However, don’t use more than recommended; it won’t help your skin improve faster. Instead, it increases the risk of peeling, redness and even making your skin look worse.

It's important to note that tretinoin can cause skin irritation, redness, and peeling, especially when first starting treatment. It is recommended to start with a lower concentration or less frequent application and gradually increase as tolerated under the guidance of a dermatologist or healthcare provider.
Proper sun protection is also essential when using tretinoin, as it can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight.
