About Symbicort

What is Symbicort used for?

Symbicort is a medication for managing asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The generic form of Symbicort is Budesonide/Formoterol (Breyna).

How Symbicort works

This drug combines a corticosteroid (budesonide) and a long-acting beta-agonist (formoterol). It is administered orally through an inhaler. The steroid part of the medication reduces inflammation and the beta-agonist part relaxes the muscles, allowing the airways to open more, improving the patient’s breathing. This process prevents swelling and mucus production, making breathing easier for those with respiratory conditions.

Regular use of Symbicort inhalers has been shown to prevent sudden attacks of asthma or COPD, reduce the overall severity of the disease and halt or slow the progression and worsening of lung disease.

The long-acting beta-agonist (formoterol) can be added to a healthcare plan for patients who need additional assistance. It is used to manage the long-term disease course of COPD, chronic bronchitis and asthma by preventing flare-ups and breathing problems.

Symbicort is not suitable for treating sudden, severe breathing problems like an acute COPD exacerbation or an attack of asthma. Patients should always have a rescue inhaler like albuterol ready for emergencies.

What are the side effects of Symbicort?

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms or your condition worsens over time. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction or severe side effects:

    • Sneezing
    • Sore throat
    • Coughing
    • Headache
    • Upper respiratory tract infection
    • Nasal congestion

COPD

  • Colds
  • Mouth or throat fungal infection
  • Bronchitis
Other Side Effects
  • Back pain
  • Stomach ache
  • Vomiting and nausea
How to Take Symbicort

Most patients are prescribed to take two puffs of their Symbicort inhaler in the morning and at night, for a total of four puffs per day.

Your dosage can vary depending on the severity of your lung condition, age, response to treatment and other factors determined by your doctor. Use Symbicort as instructed by your doctor and as indicated on your prescription.

In case of an asthma attack, do not use your Symbicort inhaler. You should have your rescue medicine ready for emergencies.

Symbicort comes in two doses: 80/4.5mcg and 160/4.5mcg. The difference is the amount of budesonide (corticosteroid) in the inhaler.

Depending on the size of your inhaler, it can have either 60 or 120 measured puffs. The generic inhaler for Symbicort is Breyna (Budesonide/Formoterol) and is dosed in the same way as the trade name drug Symbicort.

Typical Doses For Symbicort

Asthma:

Adults and Adolescents (12 years and older):

  • Symbicort 80/4.5 mcg or 160/4.5 mcg: 2 inhalations twice daily
  • Maximum dose: 4 inhalations of Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg twice daily

Children (6-11 years):

  • Symbicort 80/4.5 mcg: 2 inhalations twice daily
  • Maximum dose: 2 inhalations of Symbicort 80/4.5 mcg twice daily

COPD:

Adults:

  • Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg: 2 inhalations twice daily
  • Maximum dose: 4 inhalations of Symbicort 160/4.5 mcg twice daily

It's important to note that the dosage may need to be adjusted based on the individual's response to the medication, the severity of their condition, and any other medical conditions or medications they are taking.

For both asthma and COPD, Symbicort should be used regularly, even when you have no symptoms, to help control and prevent symptoms. It is not intended for use as a rescue inhaler for acute bronchospasm.

It's always best to follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider and the product label. If you have any concerns or questions about dosing, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
